What do I do if my garage door spring breaks?

Your garage door springs suddenly breaks before work, and your car is stuck. Now what?
On average, garage door springs need to be replaced every ten years. Others estimate that they have about 10,000 cycles (one cycle being one time up and one time down) before they inevitably wear out and break.
Since no one is counting how many times they open and close their garage door on a daily basis nor do many remember when they last replaced their garage door springs, Garage Force One crafted this simple guide to selecting garage door springs.
The first thing you will notice is your garage door only opens about 2 inches off of the ground when you push the button on your garage door opener. The springs job is to lift the door. Without that tensioned spring, the door will get very heavy. Do not try to lift it.
Most homeowners have front torsion garage door springs. That is when the springs are mounted above the garage door on a bar expanding along the whole width of the garage door.
Front torsion garage door springs vary on price depending on how many cycles you want to get out of them. It starts at 10,000 cycles and goes up to 30,000 cycles. Most residential garage doors are equipped with the 10,000 cycle garage door spring.
On most 2-car garage doors there are TWO springs — one on the left side and one on the right. If one spring breaks, it is best to replace both springs at the same time to ensure they are the same age and the spring is not breaking every few years. After deciding that your door is equipped with a front torsion garage door spring, the next step is to select whether you want it OIL-TEMPERED OR ZINC-GALVANIZED. Your selection varies on what kind-of environment you live in. Oil-tempered springs are the most popular selection. They work well in high humidity places like Florida and are known to be strong and durable. Zinc-galvanized springs are not as greasy and are less likely to have corrosion.
Because torsion springs are wound up a certain number of times, it is best to get them checked to ensure your springs are lifting your garage door and not your garage door opener pulling the extra weight.
When replacing your front torsion springs, it is also important to consider swapping out the 2 end bearings and center bearings. This is what the spring uses to spin. They are packed with grease and when that grease dries up the ball bearings are just grinding on each other. Bearings are inexpensive but critical to making your springs last longer.
Extension springs are commonly found on smaller, single-car garage doors. Some lighter weight double garage doors have them too . Extension springs can pose a serious safety risk when they break because the older springs are not equipped with a safety wire. That means if they break the spring will likely burst and cause property damage and major injuries.
If your garage is equipped with extension springs, it may be for a certain engineering reason such as low headroom in your garage or short ceilings.
This spring system is similar to the front torsion spring which is mounted above the garage door EXCEPT instead of being mounted on the outside, the spring is hidden inside the long tube. The Wayne Dalton torquemaster typically last around 7 years. This is a more costly spring repair job, but definitely an option. Often times, Garage Force One converts Wayne Dalton torquemaster to the front torsion spring mentioned above
